A
Past Society President On the Opioid Crisis
To
the Editor:
As a
pain physician with experience treating chronic pain patients over the past 30
years—initially as medical director of the Boston Pain Center, subsequently the
Presbyterian Hospital Pain Center and currently Carolina Pain Associates—I need
to share my thoughts on the current health care crisis as it affects patients
who have acute and chronic pain.
Across
the country but especially in the South, with Broward County in Florida one of
the earliest areas to be in crisis, pain patients are increasingly unable to
get their pain medication prescriptions filled. This is especially true for
controlled substances and most problematic when those substances are opioid
analgesics.
